Arte, pasión y solera

Since its creation in 1998, ARTE Y SOLERA (the Mayumi Kagita and Hiroki Sato Flamenco Dance Company) has focused on creating flamenco works in and from Japan, where the genre is extremely popular, respecting the traditions and techniques of the art form while at the same time taking the culture and traditional arts of Japan into account.

The company has also accepted the challenge of performing ningyo joruri (puppet theatre) and kabuki works through the medium of flamenco, and that of dancing to flamenco sung in Japanese, thus shattering a practice that had become taboo.

As part of the programme dedicated to this year’s guest country, the company proudly presents their show Art, Passion and Solera at the Veranos de la Villa Festival, a production that seeks to find common ground between flamenco and kabuki, with a special guest appearance by the well-known actor Kazutaro Nakamura, and to thereby create a new art form by merging the two traditions. Although the show’s ten acts do not tell a specific story as such, they do discover a common language that transcends borders.
