assimilating / Moving State 1

Ever since Hiroaki Umeda set up his company S20, his subtle yet violent dance pieces have been acclaimed by critics and audiences all over the world - the company has already visited Madrid twice - and have confirmed the multidisciplinary creator and artist as one of the leading figures in Japan’s avant-garde art scene. Umeda is renowned for his highly holistic artistic methodology with a strong digital background, which considers not only physical elements as dance, but also optical, sonic, sensory and, above all, spatio-temporal components as part of the choreography.

He is now coming to the Veranos de la Villa Festival to add his two most recent choreographies: Assimilating and Moving State 1 to the festival programme, which features Japan as this year’s guest country. The first piece embodies Hiroaki Umeda’s idea of behavioural design as a dance work. Once defined as dance, movement is in fact determined by attitude. The dynamics emanating from each person’s body construct the space. In the second piece, Umeda explores the concept of dance and the human body as natural phenomena caused by the relationship between several factors. The body expands and disappears at one and the same time: it is the presentation of the artist’s vision and thoughts on corporal beings and movement.
