Bate Fado

Bate Fado

Jonas&Lander first met at the Escola Superior de Dança when they were students, an encounter that sparked a collaboration that has, according to members of the Portuguese dance scene, a markedly independent character, with unique contours that explore the fusion between different performing arts, placing special emphasis on music. Bate Fado is their latest creation, a hybrid show midway between dance and concert, designed for nine performers: four dancers, four musicians and a fado singer who also dances.

As is the case with most popular musical trends, such as samba or flamenco, fado also has its own dances. In Lisbon, its most popular form of expression was Fado Batido, a dance based on energetic and highly polished tap dancing.

In Bate Fado, Jonas&Lander seek to reinterpret and revive the art of beating (stamping) fado, where dance flows from the quality of the percussion instrument in dialogue with voices and guitars. Bate Fado demonstrates that it is the first step in this effort to rekindle the dance that Fado has lost.
