A contemporary of Lope de Vega and also one of the most distinguished pupils of the San Isidro Secondary School, a play by Rojas Zorrilla has been chosen to close the Veranos de la Villa Festival programme in the cloister of this prestigious academic institution.
The Gangs of Verona (Los bandos de Verona) - part of this year’s programmes of the Almagro International Classical Theatre Festival and the Classics in Alcalá Festival - is a witty urban cloak and dagger comedy (or farce), written in golden verse by the writer from Toledo Rojas Zorrilla, based on the 16th-century story of Pyramus and Thisbe, from which Shakespeare also drew inspiration for his famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.
The plot of this text, in a version by Eduardo Galán and directed by Daniel Alonso de Santos, focuses on the difficulties faced by the protagonists (Alejandro Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet) as they try to begin their love affair. Other secondary plots unfold around this central conflict, particularly the hilarious antics of the buffoon, Guardainfante, played on this occasion by the television actor Canco Rodríguez.
A production by Secuencia 3, Festival Iberoamericano Clásicos de Alcalá, Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo and Hawork Studio.
