CULTURE IS COOL

CULTURE IS COOL

Madrid is attracting more and more tourists during the summer months, no doubt because of its beauty and its wealth of leisure activities - including its first-class and exceptionally varied cultural offer. At the same time, more and more Madrileños are spending all or at least a good part of the summer in the capital.

Well aware that the high temperatures can be a problem in the summer, the Madrid City Council’s Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport has prepared Culture is Cool, a programme of cultural activities designed to encourage residents and visitors alike to nip into somewhere nice and cool when the sun is at its peak (from 3 to 5pm) in July and August.

This would not have been possible without the collaboration of the city’s most important museums, such as Prado Museum, Reina Sofía, Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Gallery of Royal Collections, not to mention the Madrid History Museum, the city’s cinemas and other cultural spaces. The programme is sponsored by the SO-LA-NA Entertainment Group, with the support of the Madrid Hotel Business Association (AEHM).

As a result, in July and August, SO-LA-NA will be staging forty-six small, 15-minute flamenco performances in the three national museums mentioned above as well as in the Gallery of Royal Collections which will also be offering free guided tours at the same time.

There will also be time for some humour at the Madrid History Museum and at the Iván de Vargas, Benito Pérez Galdós (Condeduque Centre) and Vargas Llosa municipal libraries, where the stand-up comedian Sergio Pazos will be entertaining the public with his 15-minute routine.

In July and August, member cinemas of the Spanish Film Federation (FECE) will be offering reduced prices for certain early afternoon sessions - films starting before 5pm (see specific conditions at each cinema).

The Círculo de Bellas Artes has created a climate refuge in its Ballroom, where a series of performances will take place at this time in the afternoon.

Through Culture is Cool, the Madrid City Council, in its constant commitment to culture and the well-being of its citizens, is offering a series of activities and benefits at the hottest time of the day in various places around the city, encouraging people to enjoy them and extending the capital’s summer cultural offer even further.
