Symphony of sorrows / Cantata

National Dance Company of Portugal (Companhia Nacional de Bailado)

Symphony of sorrows / Cantata

Under the artistic direction of Carlos Prado, the National Dance Company of Portugal (Companhia Nacional de Bailado) will be bringing to the Veranos de la Villa festival a programme that combines two choreographers, Miguel Ramalho and Mauro Bigonzetti, who, albeit with different approaches and settings, coincide in presenting pieces that work on the collective.

While the first piece, Symphony of Sorrows, unfolds in a dense and sombre atmosphere, in which the collective proves to be the force with which to overcome the oft times tortuous paths of humanity, Cantata reflects Italian musical and popular traditions, a kind of Italian community festival in which music inspires and infects both the dancers and the audience.

Throughout its more than four decades of existence, the Companhia Nacional de Bailado has presented works of reference from the international repertoire, both from that of irresistible classical dance and from such choreographers as George Balanchine, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, William Forsythe or Akram Khan. At the same time, it has invested in commissions that reinforce Portugal's unique identity, placing special emphasis on extending invitations to such Portuguese creators as Tania Carvalho, Clara Andermatt, Sónia Baptista and Marco da Silva Ferreira.
