Oumou Sangaré presenta Timbuktu
Mali’s Oumou Sangaré hasn’t had a moment’s rest ever since she released her debut album Moussoulou in 1989. The singer who emerged from the shantytowns of Bamako to become a global superstar and a universally admired feminist icon has had a rich and fruitful career that includes a number of the most definitive recordings in the history of contemporary African music.
This grande dame of African blues is also a committed businesswoman, intent on advancing and improving the living conditions of women in her country. With many well-known fans such as Alicia Keys, Aya Nakamura and Beyoncé, Sangaré’s songs bear the stamp of resistance, as can be seen in her latest work, Timbuktu, which she will be presenting in the Central Courtyard of the Condeduque Centre for Contemporary Culture as part of the Veranos de la Villa festival programme. Her latest album combines her distinctive sound and voice with elements taken from blues, folk and rock music, resulting in a timeless work, unshackled by borders or genres.
